CHAPTER TEN

WHEN ANGIE EMERGED from the salon, Dany was waiting for her. “Turn around. Mm. He’s done an okay job.”

“You don’t like it?”

Dany ran a hand through her own spiky short locks. “Yes, but I prefer mine. We’d better go home. The police.”

“Yes,” Angie said in a pointed tone. “The police. I hope you’re going to level with them.”

“Just stay with me, but don’t put on that face. It’s a tell-tale sign.”

“You turn lying into a fine art form. Keeping the police in the dark is just plain stupid.”

“I just need you to trust me. No wonder you’re not married. You always were the goody two shoes. I see that hasn’t changed.”

Angie scowled, but didn’t respond. They were both scared witless. She left the car park and turned the car onto the highway. Nick would be pacing outside the house. She stamped on the accelerator and the sports car responded with a roar. When they reached the cliff road, she slowed. Beyond the breakers, tiny racing yachts competed in a bunch, their white sails stark against the blue water. “Today’s race day,” Dany said in a low voice.

They fell silent. It was on such a day that their father had drowned after a squall hit as the boats raced each other across the sea. Angie believed that her father’s tragic death couldn’t hurt anymore, but to her surprise, the sight of the boats cut into her, almost as raw as the day it happened. She had spent many a day following the accident, sitting on the beach and staring out to sea. There was no one to blame. And no body to bury. It was if nature had simply reclaimed him. She still missed her Dad’s strength and wisdom.

“I honestly thought you’d be married with a baby or two by now,” Dany said.

“You’re the married one.”

“It wouldn’t be fair to have a baby. Art always comes first with me. Anyway, I don’t think Paul wants a child.”

“Doesn’t he?”

“You’d make a great mother, Angel.”

“I stayed too long with the wrong guy. I’d like a family, but I have years before the clock starts ticking.”

“What was he like this man of yours?”

“Tom was my previous boss. Divorced. Older.”

“How much older?”

“Forty-five.”

Dany widened her eyes. “Chinese?”

“No. English.”

“What happened?”

“I saw sense finally and called a halt to it.” She bit her lip. “It was hard.”

“You were in love with him?”

“I think I depended on him more than loved him. Actually, I have a lot to thank him for. He taught me about life, and he helped my career.”

“Would he have married you?”

“He said it wouldn’t be fair to me. He didn’t want any more children.”

“Perhaps that’s why he appealed. He didn’t pressure you to commit.”

“Maybe.” That had occurred to her too, when she’d managed to look back with a measure of detachment. She’d also deduced he was someone to lean on in the sometimes difficult and lonely transition to living and working in Hong Kong. Perhaps Paul had been right, she wasn’t the strong one.

“Remember our neighbor’s son, Brian Cash?”

Angie grinned.
